In a statement shared on social media, Mayor Mamdani said he had been briefed that preparations were underway to transfer President Maduro and his wife to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. He warned that if these reports were accurate, the move would be unprecedented and extremely dangerous.
Criticising the Trump administration, Mamdani said that unilateral action against the head of a sovereign state amounts to an act of war. He added that such actions violate US federal laws, international law, and the United Nations Charter.

The mayor further stated that open attempts at regime change do not remain confined abroad but have direct consequences for cities like New York. He noted that thousands of Venezuelan nationals live in New York, consider it their home, and could face heightened insecurity, anxiety, and social disruption due to such developments.
Mayor Mamdani emphasised that global conflicts must be resolved through diplomacy, dialogue, and respect for international law, not through force or coercion, urging the United States to pursue a lawful and diplomatic path.
It is pertinent to mention that tensions between the United States and Venezuela have sharply escalated following legal action announced in New York against President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, alongside claims of US involvement in Venezuela’s internal affairs. The situation has sparked international debate over sovereignty, regime change, and adherence to international law, with Venezuela’s leadership rejecting US actions and warning of serious regional and global consequences.
