A powerful blast ripped through a Waldo’s store in the heart of Hermosillo, leaving the city in shock and grief. Investigators believe the explosion may have been triggered by a faulty electric transformer located inside the store.
Governor Alfonso Durazo confirmed that several of the victims were minors. He said the injured were being treated at hospitals and promised a thorough investigation to uncover the exact cause of the tragedy and identify any negligence involved.
The state prosecutor’s office said, “The working assumption is that the incident was accidental, and the investigation is looking into a transformer located inside the store.” Officials added that once firefighters allow entry, they would confirm the precise cause.
President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying on X, “I have been in contact with the Sonora governor, Alfonso Durazo, to provide support where needed.” She also directed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodriguez to send assistance to the victims and their families.
Eyewitnesses told Mexican media that customers tried to take shelter inside the store after hearing a loud explosion but were trapped as flames spread rapidly. Photos from local outlets showed the building’s charred exterior, shattered windows, and smoke billowing over the area.
