US condemns Iranian strikes inside Pakistan
WASHINGTON: (Web Desk) The United States has condemned recent Iranian strikes in Pakistan, Iraq and Syria while Tehran has claimed that those strikes were carried out against “anti-Iranian terrorist groups”.
State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told the media persons, “So we do condemn those strikes. We’ve seen Iran violate the sovereign borders of three of its neighbors in just the past couple of days.”
Amidst the US condemnation, China has offered to mediate between Iran and Pakistan as there fears of further escalation between the two neighbouring countries after reciprocal strikes.
A Beijing Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stated, “Iran and Pakistan are China’s close neighbours, friendly countries and countries with great influence. China sincerely hopes that both sides can keep calm and exercise control.”
The spokeswoman further noted, “If there is a need on both sides, we are also willing to play a constructive role in easing the situation.”
In response to the Iranian strike, Pakistani fighter jets targeted alleged hideouts of nationalist separatists in neighbouring Iran. Iran’s Irna news agency claimed that Pakistan’s strikes killed three women and four children.
The exchanges between the two neighbours have escalated tension. The regional powers such as China and Russia have called on both the sides to show constraints and not let the conflict escalate further.
