(Web Desk): TikTok’s new update is going to roll out in the coming weeks, allowing users to send voice notes up to 60 seconds long and share up to nine images or videos in both individual and group direct messages (DMs).

TikTok is shaping out to be a social communication platform. Users can press and hold a microphone icon to record voice notes lasting up to 60 seconds; the note sends automatically once released—unless canceled by dragging the recording interface.

Up to nine images or videos can be sent at once, either taken live with the camera or selected from the gallery—editing is available before sending.

TikTok has implemented several safeguards to ensure user privacy and reduce misuse:

New message requests cannot include photos or videos captured outside of TikTok; only existing TikTok content is allowed in initial DMs.

It is also important to note that users under 16 still cannot use DMs. Users aged 16–18 have automated filters blocking images containing nudity—both sender and recipient are protected. Those over 18 can choose to toggle these protections in app settings.

This update signals TikTok’s ambition to compete more directly with messaging-centric apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and iMessage, as interaction is the key focus and it enriches users beyond public video feeds.

By integrating more expressive and private communication tools, TikTok hopes to boost in-app engagement and user retention, especially among Gen Z, who prefer voice messaging as a faster, more personal way to communicate.
