(Web Desk): X has introduced a new feature revealing users’ locations sparking both transparency praise and rising concerns over privacy and safety.

The social media platform X has launched a new location-transparency feature that reveals the country or region from which accounts are based. This move has stirred heated debate about privacy and platform accountability.

Under the “About This Account” panel, users can now see details such as the country an account posts from, account creation data and previous name changes.

The aim, according to X’s head of product Nikita Bier is to improve transparency and let users better assess whether profiles are genuine.

Almost immediately after the rollout many accounts that had long claimed to be based in the United States were shown to be based in the United States were shown to be operating from the countries like Bangladesh, India, Thailand and Eastern Europe.

The revelations have fueled renewed scrutiny of suspected foreign run political and misinformation accounts, especially those making pro-political content.

But the update also prompted concerns and criticism about privacy. Analysts and users warned that location data may be inaccurate or easily manipulated, especially via VPNs or temporary travel, meaning some location tags may mislead rather than clarify.
