Google has quietly started rolling out a long-awaited Gmail feature that allows users to change their email addresses without losing existing emails, files or access to Google services, according to updated support documents and multiple tech reports.
The feature, which has not yet been officially announced worldwide, has appeared on Google’s help pages and is currently available to select users only, indicating a phased rollout.
Early reports suggest the option surfaced first in regions like India, where Gmail support documentation briefly showed instructions for changing an @gmail.com address.
Under the new system, users can switch to a new Gmail address while their old email automatically becomes an alias.
This means messages sent to the previous address will still land in the same inbox, avoiding disruption to contacts or services linked to the account. Importantly, emails, Google Drive files, Photos, YouTube history and other account data remain unaffected.
Google has yet to confirm when the feature will be available globally. Many users still see the older message stating that Gmail addresses cannot be changed, reinforcing that the update is still in testing or gradual release mode.

As word spreads, the update has sparked strong interest online, with searches for Gmail address change, Google Gmail update, and change Gmail email without losing data trending. If rolled out fully, experts say it would mark one of Gmail’s most significant user-focused changes in years.
