LAHORE (Web Desk): Pakistan has taken a major step in technology as NED University successfully tested the country’s first AI-powered driverless car, drawing strong interest from students and experts.

The autonomous vehicle was developed at NED University of Engineering and Technology under the National Center for Artificial Intelligence. The project began nearly a year ago and has now reached the road-testing stage, where the car moved smoothly on campus without a human driver.

The prototype is based on an electric car imported from China, which was transformed into a driverless vehicle using robotics, advanced mapping systems, LIDAR sensors, radar, and computer vision technology. Researchers say the system allows the car to understand and react to its surroundings in real time.

After a full year of research and development, the project has entered its practical phase. The steering system uses radar and visual data to safely guide the car along its path. For safety reasons, the vehicle’s speed is currently limited to between 15 and 20 kilometers per hour.

According to the research team, the driverless car has been designed specifically for Pakistan’s busy and challenging traffic environment. Its sensors can detect potholes, uneven roads, and other common infrastructure problems found in local cities.

Work is still underway to further improve the system. Engineers are now focusing on better object detection, clearer lane recognition, improved speed control, and accurate identification of traffic signals to prepare the vehicle for more complex conditions.
