LAHORE (Web Desk): The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) defeated Brazil’s Flamengo 2-1 on penalties to win the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final in Qatar after the match ended 1-1 following extra time.

Back-up goalkeeper Matvei Safonov saved four penalties as Paris Saint-Germain edged out Brazilians Flamengo 2-1 in a shootout to win the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final in Qatar.

PSG took the lead through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, but Flamengo fought back when Jorginho scored from the penalty spot. Both teams pushed hard, yet neither could find a winning goal in normal time or extra time.

Flamengo, the Copa Libertadores champions, had earned their place in the final by beating Cruz Azul and African champions Pyramids. They gave the European champions a tough fight and refused to back down. PSG, coached by Luis Enrique, reached the final directly and relied heavily on backup goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.

PSG had an early goal ruled out by VAR after Flamengo goalkeeper Agustin Rossi failed to clear the ball. The opener eventually came before half-time when Rossi made another mistake, allowing Kvaratskhelia an easy finish.

Flamengo were awarded a penalty in the second half after a VAR review for a foul by Marquinhos. Jorginho calmly converted to bring his side level and keep the contest alive.

Both teams created chances late on, with Ousmane Dembele going close for PSG. Extra time produced more pressure but no goals, setting up the penalties.

Safonov, playing as Lucas Chevalier continues his recovery from injury, saved PSG after misses from Dembele and Bradley Barcola. His performance helped PSG follow Real Madrid, winners of the first title last year.

With this win, PSG have now lifted the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1, Coupe de France, UEFA Super Cup, Trophée des Champions, and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup in 2025.

PSG midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery said, “We can be proud of ourselves, we played a great match against a tough opponent.” Coach Luis Enrique added, “Six trophies, not bad. We want to keep winning and make history.”
