The Mambas came into the match with a poor AFCON record, having drawn four and lost 12 games since their debut in 1986. Despite the odds, they played with confidence and intent.
Faisal Bangal opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a powerful header from a corner. Five minutes later, Geny Catamo calmly converted a penalty to make it 2-0 after a foul on captain Domingues. Gabon hit back just before half-time when star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang tapped in after the Mozambique goalkeeper failed to hold a shot. Mozambique still led 2-1 at the break.
