LAHORE (Web Desk): FIFA has announced $60 World Cup tickets after a strong backlash over high prices for the 2026 tournament in the US, Canada and Mexico.

FIFA said it has created a new “Supporter Entry Tier” ticket priced at $60 for all 104 matches, including the final. The move comes after fans worldwide criticized the original pricing.

According to FIFA, the new ticket category is “designed to further support travelling fans following their national teams across the tournament”. These tickets will be available only to fans of qualified teams.

The $60 tickets will make up 10 percent of each national football federation’s ticket allocation. FIFA said this would allow loyal supporters to attend matches at a lower cost.

However, fan group Football Supporters Europe (FSE) said the step is not enough. The group had earlier called FIFA’s ticket prices “extortionate” and “astronomical” as individual final match tickets under the original pricing model range from over $4,000 to nearly $8,700.

FSE said ticket prices for 2026 are almost five times higher than the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It described FIFA’s pricing as a “monumental betrayal of the tradition of the World Cup”.

The group added that a fan following their team from the opening match to the final could still spend at least $6,900. It also recalled that FIFA had promised tickets starting from $21 in a 2018 bid document.

Reacting to the new announcement, FSE said FIFA’s move looks like an appeasement tactic after global criticism. It said the policy was rushed and made without proper consultation.

FSE warned that only a few hundred fans per match may benefit from the $60 tickets, while most supporters will still face very high prices. The group also criticized FIFA for failing to address the needs of disabled fans and their companions.

FIFA said national federations are asked to ensure that these tickets go to loyal fans closely connected to their teams. It also said fans who buy knockout-stage tickets will not pay an administrative fee if their team is eliminated and refunds are issued.

FIFA added that the announcement comes amid “extraordinary global demand for tickets”, with around 20 million requests already submitted. The first ticket draw for all price categories will take place on January 13.
