Pakistan kicked off their ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a heart-stopping three-wicket victory over the Netherlands in the tournament’s opening match at Colombo, thanks to an all-round match-winning performance by Faheem Ashraf.
After winning the toss, Pakistan opted to field first. The decision paid off as Pakistan’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, restricting the Netherlands to 147 all out in 19.5 overs.
Netherlands Struggle Against Pakistan Bowling Attack
The Dutch innings never fully gained momentum despite a few fighting contributions. Scott Edwards, the Netherlands captain, top-scored with 37 runs off 29 balls, while Bas de Leede added 30 runs off 25 deliveries.
Michael Levitt struck a brisk 24 off 15 balls, but consistent breakthroughs prevented any significant partnerships.
Pakistan’s bowling attack shared the spoils. Salman Mirza led the charge with three wickets, while Mohammad Nawaz, Abrar Ahmed, and Saim Ayub claimed two wickets each. Shaheen Shah Afridi chipped in with one wicket as the Netherlands lower order collapsed under pressure.

Pakistan’s Batting Line Falters in the Chase
Chasing a modest target of 148, Pakistan’s innings got off to a shaky start. Saim Ayub played an aggressive knock of 24 runs off 13 balls, including four boundaries and a six, before being dismissed with the score at 27.
Captain Salman Ali Agha managed only 12 runs, while Sahibzada Farhan was dismissed for 46, and Usman Khan was bowled for a duck. The situation worsened when Babar Azam fell cheaply, leaving Pakistan in deep trouble.
Middle-order batters Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz also failed to steady the innings, intensifying fears of an upset defeat.
Faheem Ashraf Turns the Match on Its Head
With wickets tumbling and pressure mounting, Faheem Ashraf emerged as Pakistan’s savior. Displaying calm nerves and smart shot selection, the all-rounder guided Pakistan home in a tense finish, transforming a seemingly lost match into a memorable victory.
Pakistan eventually crossed the line with three wickets in hand, sparking celebrations in the dressing room and among fans.
