Champions Trophy: New Zealand set 321-run target for Pakistan

KARACHI: (Web Desk) In the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, New Zealand set a target of 321 runs for Pakistan to win on Wednesday.

In the match at Karachi’s National Stadium, Pakistan won the toss and decided to field first. New Zealand scored 320 runs for 5 wickets in 50 overs. Will Young and Tom Latham both scored centuries.

Will Young scored 107 runs, including 1 six and 11 fours, becoming the first player to score a century in this Champions Trophy. Tom Latham remained unbeaten on 118 runs from 104 balls, hitting 3 sixes and 10 fours.

Glenn Phillips played a quick knock of 61 runs off 39 balls. Devon Conway, Darryl Mitchell, and Kane Williamson scored 10, 10, and 1 run respectively before being out. For Pakistan, Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah took 2 wickets each, while Abrar Ahmed took 1 wicket.

Earlier, Captain Mohammad Rizwan said there is no pressure as defending champions, and the team will focus on playing well. He also mentioned that there was one change in the team, with fast bowler Haris Rauf replacing Faheem Ashraf. Rizwan stated that the Champions Trophy is a big tournament and the team is ready to perform. He added that the mistakes made during the Tri-Series will not be repeated, and the team will try to dismiss New Zealand for a low score and win by a good margin.

The Pakistan team includes Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam, Saud Shakil, Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Ali Agha, Tayyab Tahir, Khushdil Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Abrar Ahmed.

Pakistan has a stronger record in head-to-head matches against New Zealand. Out of 118 One Day International matches between the two teams, Pakistan has won 61. However, in the Champions Trophy, Pakistan has never beaten New Zealand. The two teams have faced each other in three matches, including two semi-finals, and New Zealand won all three.

The ICC Champions Trophy will run until March 9, with thrilling matches for cricket fans. Eight teams will compete for the title.
