PHC dismisses plea as Murad Saeed returns PTI ticket
PESHAWAR: (Suno News) Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Murad Saeed has returned the party ticket and withdrew his candidature from the upcoming general elections, it was revealed during the hearing of a petition in the Peshawar High Court (PHC) here on Thursday.
Murad Saeed’s lawyer informed the court that he had returned the ticket and would not be participating in the elections. Consequently, the bench consisting of Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim, Justice Ejaz Anwar and Justice Sahibzada Asadullah disposed of the petition as withdrawn.
During the previous hearing, the bench had reserved its decision on the petition filed against the rejection of Murad Saeed’s nomination papers.
Earlier, the advocate general representing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had argued that when a person is declared fugitive, he suffers forfeiture of some fundamental rights including the right to vote or to participate in elections. The court remarked that it should not be misused to prevent individuals from participating in elections.
Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim also expressed concerns about the fugitive who had not yet surrendered himself before the law, and questioned how such an individual could have their papers approved, be re-elected, and engage in legislation. The court had acknowledged that becoming a fugitive might result in losing certain basic rights including the right to vote or contest polls.
After withdrawal of the appeal, the bench upheld the decision of the Election Tribunal and dismissed the petition filed by Murad Saeed as withdrawn.
