The Murree district administration has issued a weather advisory for tourists as rain and snowfall continue across Murree, Galiyat, and surrounding areas, with adverse conditions expected until January 2, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

Visitors have been advised to ensure their vehicles are winter-ready, including the use of tire chains in snow-covered areas, maintaining proper tire pressure, and keeping fuel tanks full to avoid emergencies.

Murree Expressway Closed After Heavy Snowfall

Amid worsening weather, authorities have closed the Murree Expressway for general traffic following heavy snowfall. According to the National Highway and Motorway Police, the closure applies to vehicles entering Murree from Phulgara Toll Plaza, while the N-75 highway remains open for local residents and emergency services.

Tourists and non-essential travellers have been strongly advised to postpone travel plans due to slippery roads, low visibility, and heightened accident risks. Officials said the decision was taken to prevent traffic congestion and avoid tragedies often linked to peak winter tourism.

Safety Measures and Traffic Management Plan

The Murree administration and traffic police have finalised a special traffic management plan ahead of the busy winter and New Year period. Leaves of traffic wardens have been cancelled, and additional personnel deployed across sensitive points to ensure quick response to emergencies.

Tourists have been instructed to strictly follow traffic police directions, comply with approved routes, and adhere to standard operating procedures, including guidelines for environment-friendly tourism. Vehicles lacking proper winter equipment may be stopped from entering snowfall-prone areas once roads reopen.

Help Desks and Emergency Support

Deputy Commissioner Murree Agha Zahir Abbas Shirazi stated that ensuring tourist safety remains the administration’s top priority. He urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel during harsh weather and prioritise safety over leisure.
