(Web Desk): Dense fog has cleared across several regions, allowing the National Highway and Motorway Police to reopen major motorways, restoring traffic flow on key routes linking Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Traffic has resumed on several major motorways across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after dense winter fog caused temporary closures, officials from the National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) confirmed on Thursday. Improved visibility has allowed authorities to reopen critical routes for safe travel.

According to the NHMP, the following motorway sections have been reopened for traffic after fog conditions eased:

  • M-1 Peshawar to Islamabad Motorway
  • M-14 Hakla to Dera Ismail Khan Motorway
  • M-2 South Kot Momin to Lahore
  • M-3 Lahore to Abdul Hakeem
  • M-4 Pindi Bhattian to Abdul Hakeem
  • M-4 Abdul Hakeem to Sher Shah
  • M-5 Sector-2 Zahir Pir to Rohri Toll Plaza
  • M-5 Sector-1 Sher Shah Multan to Zahir Pir

Earlier, dense fog had engulfed large parts of Punjab and adjoining areas, sharply reducing visibility and increasing the risk of accidents. As a precautionary measure, motorway authorities temporarily closed several high-speed routes, a standard safety practice during winter nights and early mornings when fog intensity peaks.

An NHMP spokesperson said traffic was restored only after continuous monitoring confirmed that visibility levels were safe for motorists. “The reopening of motorways was carried out gradually to ensure commuter safety,” the official added.

Despite the reopening, the NHMP has warned that fog may return during late-night and early-morning hours in the coming days. Motorists have been advised to strictly follow safety guidelines while traveling in fog-prone conditions.

NHMP Safety Advisory for Foggy Conditions:

  • Drive at reduced speeds
  • Use fog lights or low-beam headlights
  • Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles
  • Avoid sudden braking or lane changes
  • Check travel advisories before starting the journey

Authorities said traffic conditions will continue to be closely monitored, and motorway closures may be reimposed if visibility drops again. The NHMP urged public cooperation, stressing that safety remains the top priority during the ongoing winter fog season.
