Heavy monsoon alert raises fears of urban flooding in these major cities
The Met Office has issued its monsoon 2026 outlook, warning of mixed weather patterns across the country. Officials say flood risk will remain despite changes in rainfall trends.
According to the forecast, Pakistan may receive below-normal rainfall from July to September in most regions. However, the risk of flooding and urban flooding will still remain active.
Experts warn that reduced rainfall could negatively impact agriculture and crop production. They also expect an increase in seasonal diseases due to changing weather patterns.
Meteorologists have clearly stated that less rain does not mean safety from floods. Heavy rain spells can still trigger urban flooding in major cities of Sindh, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The forecast also highlights that Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan may receive above-normal rainfall. This uneven pattern may create regional weather imbalances.
Officials further warn that temperatures are likely to remain above normal during the monsoon season. Northern Punjab and western Gilgit-Baltistan may face severe heat stress conditions.
Experts also fear that rising temperatures in northern areas could speed up glacier melting. This may increase the risk of glacial lake outburst floods in vulnerable regions.
Weather pattern is becoming unstable in Pakistan. Less rain does not mean less danger this year. Heat and floods may hit different regions at the same time.
