Dense fog has engulfed large parts of Pakistan, leading to dangerously low visibility and forcing the closure of several key motorways across the country, officials confirmed on Monday.

According to a spokesperson for the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) Central Region, motorway sections M-3 from Jaranwala to Darkhana, M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Abdul Hakeem, and M-5 from Multan to Zahir Pir were closed due to hazardous driving conditions. Additional closures were imposed on the M-5 motorway from Multan to Sukkur as dense fog persisted.

Authorities further shut down M-5 sections from Multan to Dera Ismail Khan and from Rahim Yar Khan to Rohri after visibility dropped to unsafe levels, posing a serious risk of traffic accidents.

The motorway spokesperson said the closures were a precautionary measure to safeguard lives and property, warning that lane violations and speeding during foggy conditions could result in fatal crashes. Drivers were strongly advised to observe lane discipline at all times.

Motorists were also urged to limit travel during foggy hours and plan journeys during safer daylight periods. According to the NHMP, the safest travel window during fog is between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm.

The spokesperson emphasized the use of fog lights, maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, avoiding sudden braking, and refraining from unnecessary travel. Road users were advised to contact the motorway helpline 130 for real-time updates and assistance.

Weather authorities have warned that foggy conditions may continue in parts of Punjab and southern regions, urging commuters to remain cautious until visibility improves.
