(Web Desk): Dense fog across Punjab and Sindh has forced authorities to close multiple motorway sections, disrupting traffic as visibility plunged to dangerous levels overnight.

Thick fog blanketed large parts of Punjab and Sindh from Friday night into Saturday morning, prompting the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) to close several motorway sections to ensure public safety.

According to a Motorway Police spokesperson, the closures were enforced due to extremely low visibility and hazardous driving conditions. The affected routes include Motorway M2 from Lahore to Kot Momin, M3 from Lahore to Multan, M4 from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, M5 from Multan to Sukkur, and M11 from Lahore to Sialkot. All sections were closed for all kinds of traffic.

Motorway Police spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed said the decision was taken to protect lives and property as dense fog significantly reduced visibility, increasing the risk of serious accidents. Fog was also reported in several cities along the National Highway, further complicating travel conditions.

Authorities warned that lane violations during foggy conditions can be fatal, urging motorists to strictly follow lane discipline. Drivers have been advised to use fog lights and low-beam headlights, reduce speed, and maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead.

The Motorway Police strongly advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours when fog tends to intensify. For those who must travel, authorities recommend daytime journeys between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, when visibility is relatively better.

Commuters were also encouraged to use alternative routes such as GT Road where possible. Monitoring teams remain deployed on major routes to manage traffic flow and respond swiftly as weather conditions change.

Despite intermittent improvements, officials cautioned that fog may return suddenly, and additional restrictions could be imposed if visibility deteriorates again, especially on high-speed routes connecting major cities.

Motorists have been urged to stay updated through official advisories and contact the Motorway Police helpline 130 for real-time traffic updates, route guidance, or emergency assistance. Authorities emphasized that public cooperation is crucial to ensure road safety during the ongoing winter fog season.
