A Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight travelling from Jeddah to Lahore made an emergency landing at King Fahd International Airport in Dammam after signalling a general onboard emergency, the airline confirmed on Saturday.
According to a PIA spokesperson, Flight PK860, operated by a Boeing 777, diverted while still in Saudi airspace due to a technical issue. The aircraft was carrying 437 passengers, excluding crew, and was scheduled to land in Lahore at 8:00 pm.
Emergency Signal Triggered
During the flight, the crew activated the 7700 transponder code, an internationally recognised emergency signal that alerts air traffic control and gives the aircraft immediate priority. The move prompted authorities to guide the plane safely to Dammam.
Safe Landing, Inspections Underway
The aircraft landed safely, and engineering teams immediately began technical inspections. However, PIA has not disclosed the exact nature of the fault or provided a timeline for when the flight will resume its journey to Lahore.
Passenger Uncertainty
The airline has also remained silent on passenger facilitation, including accommodation, meals, or rescheduling arrangements, leaving many travellers awaiting updates.

Safety Under Spotlight
The incident comes as PIA continues to face heightened scrutiny over technical reliability. In recent months, the national carrier has dealt with flight disruptions linked to maintenance issues and disputes involving engineers over safety standards and spare parts.
Passengers have been advised to stay in contact with airline staff and await further announcements regarding onward travel.
