Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given in-principle approval to divide Lahore into two districts, marking a major step toward administrative and urban governance reforms in the province.
The decision was taken during a high-level meeting, where it was agreed that the administrative restructuring of Lahore will begin immediately after Basant. The move aims to reduce the city’s growing population burden and improve the efficiency of public service delivery.
Under the new setup, Lahore will operate as two separate districts with independent administrative structures. Deputy Commissioners, police formations, and municipal systems will function separately to ensure better coordination and faster decision-making.
Officials said the administrative boundaries of Lahore will be redefined to improve the provision of civic services. The division is expected to help authorities address long-standing issues such as traffic congestion, encroachments, sanitation, and municipal management more effectively.
According to the Punjab government, Lahore’s rapidly expanding population has made centralized administration increasingly difficult. Dividing the city into two districts is seen as essential to resolve public complaints in a timely and efficient manner.
Following the chief minister’s directions, relevant departments have been instructed to complete all preparations promptly. Maryam Nawaz has called for the administrative process to be finalized today, while another review meeting has been scheduled for February 9 to address critical aspects of the plan.

Speaking at the meeting, the chief minister said the decision is purely administrative and aimed at public convenience, not political considerations. She stressed that creating two districts will make governance faster, more transparent, and closer to citizens.
Maryam Nawaz added that modern governance models are being introduced for major cities across Punjab to ensure immediate relief and long-term urban improvement.
