KARACHI: In a dramatic departure from standard utility operations, a K-Electric field team pivoted from electrical safety protocols to a high-stakes rescue mission at the Index Palace building, successfully evacuating dozens of residents before emergency services reached the scene.

A K-Electric field team responding to a fire at the Index Palace building successfully evacuated nearly 30 residents while simultaneously working to secure the site’s electrical infrastructure during the initial phase of the emergency.

The incident unfolded within the Tipu Sultan jurisdiction when reports of a structural fire triggered an immediate response from the power utility. Following established safety mandates, the KE team arrived on-site to isolate the local feeder, a critical move designed to prevent electrical hazards and protect the surrounding power infrastructure from the encroaching flames.

However, the crew arrived to find a dire situation. With a fire raging near the staircase side of the building, the primary escape route was effectively severed, leaving approximately 25 to 30 residents trapped in the upper floors.

In the critical initial phase of the blaze, and with formal rescue departments yet to arrive, the KE team acted to rescue residents trapped inside the building.

Utilizing the vehicle-mounted ladders typically reserved for line maintenance, the crew initiated an evacuation. One by one, they reached the trapped occupants, bringing them to safety as smoke began to fill the structure.

By the time the Fire Brigade reached Index Palace to take over firefighting operations, the KE team had already cleared the building of its most vulnerable occupants.

A spokesperson for the utility confirmed that while the team fulfilled its primary responsibility of securing the electrical supply, the exceptional initiative and sense of responsibility shown by the staff on the ground was a direct response to the life-threatening conditions.

Preliminary assessments confirm that no K-Electric assets were damaged or involved in the origin of the fire. A root cause analysis is currently underway by local authorities to determine exactly how the blaze started.
