(Web Desk): Lahore offers free public transport and 10,000 rickshaws during Basant 2026, ensuring safe travel while promoting kite flying under government regulations.

Lahore is gearing up for Basant 2026, offering residents and visitors free public transport, including buses and rickshaws, for all three days of the festival. Authorities have deployed 10,000 rickshaws on city roads to facilitate safe and convenient travel, without any fare. Citizens will not need to book rides online and can travel freely from any location during the celebration.

The initiative aims to reduce the use of motorcycles, improving traffic safety amid the citywide festivities. Basant, known for kite flying, is being strictly regulated by the Punjab government to ensure public safety and prevent illegal sales of dangerous kite strings.

Kite Flying Registration Update:
The government has collected registration data until January 14, 2026, for kite flying participants. A total of 1,247 applications were received, with 830 approved, 350 under review, and 65 rejected due to rule violations.

Kite Sellers and Manufacturers:

  • Kite Sellers: 663 applications received; 435 approved, 200 in process, 28 rejected.
  • Kite Manufacturers: 423 applications; 281 approved, 113 in process, 27 rejected.
  • Kite Traders: 149 applications; 108 approved, 34 under review, 7 rejected.
  • Kite Associations: 12 applications; 6 approved, 3 in process, 3 rejected.

Only registered individuals are allowed to make, sell, or trade kites, while authorities have warned of strict action against illegal kite sales and the use of hazardous kite strings. The measures aim to ensure a safe, joyous Basant celebration across Lahore while minimizing accidents and law violations.

Residents are advised to enjoy the festivities responsibly and take advantage of the free public transport and rickshaw services provided for three days.
