LAHORE (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has expressed her views on albinism through a message on International Albinism Awareness Day, saying that "Albinism is not a weakness; it is just a part of natural diversity."

Maryam Nawaz conveyed how people with albinism are humans; they are no different than us, including the fact that just because of their skin colour, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t get the same amount of respect and consideration as others. She said, “It is a social duty to respect and protect them." Her words entail that the public should take care of them instead of ridiculing them just because they are different. She also called people with albinism the “bright side of beauty”, showing how their beauty brightens our world and adds a charm to society rather than taking it away.

Furthermore, she elaborated on how she wants a Punjab where just because a person is special, it doesn’t mean they should be immediately considered less than others. As far as we know, differences are what make a society shine and based on the past, people that are special undergo the most prejudice, whether it be because of their skin colour or the way they look. She underlined, "We want a Punjab where no one is considered inferior on the basis of skin, appearance or birth difference."

She also stressed how people with albinism deserve affection, embracement and, most important of all, respect. That is why it is essential to extend the range of love in our community for them. She emphasised that "the scope of love, respect and acceptance for people with albinism must be further expanded."

Moreover, Maryam Nawaz has confirmed the government s efforts to provide special people with educational and medical services and she ensured that the government is proactively working on bettering Punjab for special people by providing such services. She added, "The Punjab government is actively working to provide complete educational and medical facilities to people with albinism and other special people."

Maryam Nawaz is determined to end prejudice, intolerance and lack of empathy towards people with albinism. The inequity and bias need to end in Punjab. It is important for Punjab to unite together as one and protect the rights of people with albinism. She highlighted, "It is necessary to unite and raise our voices to protect the rights of people with albinism and eliminate discrimination."

It is a must to take a forward approach rather than a backwards one that sets us back decades, not only as a civilisation but also as humanity.
