Lahore city is rapidly modernizing its traffic system as Pelican signals are being installed across 20 of its busiest roads to enhance pedestrian safety and streamline traffic management. Following a successful pilot at Faisal Chowk on Mall Road, the project has now expanded to Jati Umra Chowk, with additional key intersections slated for upgrades.
Traffic engineers highlighted that the new Pelican signal system uses advanced video-based vehicle detection technology. The system adapts in real-time to changing traffic conditions, reducing congestion and improving traffic flow on major routes. Pedestrians can safely cross streets by pressing a button to stop vehicles, adding a layer of security for citizens.

Key corridors targeted include Mall Road intersections (GPO, High Court, Regal Chowk, Governor’s House), Ferozepur Road, Canal Road Junction, Davis Road, and popular market areas such as Barkat Market, Firdous Market, and Fortress Stadium.
Officials confirmed the Pelican signals would integrate with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority’s traffic system, allowing city authorities to monitor and manage traffic centrally via the Urban Traffic Control Center at TEPA Headquarters. The initiative is expected to reduce vehicle wait times, lower carbon emissions, and improve digital enforcement across Lahore.
The government emphasized that these upgrades reflect a broader vision to modernize urban infrastructure and promote smart, technology-driven mobility solutions in Pakistan’s largest city.
