(Web Desk): The federal government has developed a mobile application to provide petrol subsidies to low-income citizens amid the ongoing energy crisis.

According to sources, the application developed by Ministry of Information Technology & Telecom is currently undergoing testing ahead of its nationwide rollout.

The government is planning the subsidy programme mainly for motorcycle and rickshaw owners. Under this plan, motorcycle users may receive up to 20 litres of petrol per month at a subsidized rate.

A final decision about including vehicles up to 800cc is still pending. At the same time, people who are not part of this subsidy scheme will continue to face the impact of rising global oil prices.

To run the system smoothly, around 12,000 petrol pumps across the country will set up special fuel nozzles for subsidized petrol. Each petrol pump will use two mobile phones to operate a digital system for verification.

Consumers will get fuel vouchers through a mobile app. These vouchers must be shown at selected petrol pumps before buying subsidized petrol. Separate app systems will be developed for both consumers and petrol pump staff to make the process easier.

The subsidy limit for each user will be linked to their vehicle registration number and national identity card. This will help ensure transparency and stop misuse. Users will not be allowed to buy more petrol than their assigned quota.

In addition, the government is preparing a backup system to ensure fuel supply during emergencies. A 24-hour monitoring system will also be introduced to handle complaints and supervise operations.

Oil marketing companies will provide mobile devices at petrol pumps, while the IT ministry will work with mobile companies to arrange these devices.

Training videos will be available at petrol pumps and within the app to help both customers and staff understand how to use the system properly.
