Karachi (Web Desk): Jamaat e Islami (JI) chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman announced a sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly on February 14 to demand an empowered local government system for Karachi.

Addressing a rally in Karachi, Rehman criticized both the federal and PPP-led Sindh governments for failing the city. He highlighted poor governance, weak infrastructure, and slow responses to emergencies, including the deadly Gul Plaza fire. He said residents were “burning in fires” due to official negligence.

Rejecting suggestions to place Karachi under federal control, Rehman said handing the city to the Centre was not a solution. He stressed that an empowered urban local government system was the key to solving civic issues effectively.

The JI chief accused the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) of holding Sindh “hostage” and blamed the provincial government for the city’s deteriorating infrastructure. He specifically mentioned the Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) as an example of mismanagement.

Rehman also said Karachi lacked a proper master plan and demanded an end to land encroachments in urban areas to restore order and development.
