(Web Desk): The federal government is considering shifting former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail to another high-security prison, citing growing security and administrative concerns linked to frequent protests and visitor pressure outside the facility.

According to Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Broadcasting Barrister Daniyal Chaudhry, repeated demonstrations by PTI supporters and regular visits to the jail have disrupted routine prison operations and affected the lives of thousands of inmates. He said Adiala Jail currently houses around 8,000 prisoners and stressed that the administration could not allow the functioning of the prison to be compromised because of a single detainee. He added that if protests continued, the government would have no option but to take “necessary administrative steps”.

Government officials believe that relocating the former premier is being seriously reviewed as tensions around the jail continue to rise. However, PTI leaders have strongly rejected the move, calling it politically driven.

PTI MNA Barrister Umair Niazi said the reported plan to shift Imran Khan was unfair and aimed at exerting pressure on him. He warned that if the authorities attempted to move him to another jail, including Machh Jail in Balochistan as reported in some media outlets, the party would challenge the decision in court.

Legal experts note that prison rules allow the transfer of prisoners if required for legal proceedings in another jurisdiction, but such decisions can be contested through legal channels.

Imran Khan was arrested on August 5, 2023, and was initially shifted to Attock Jail. Following a petition by his legal team citing his status as former prime minister, the Islamabad High Court ordered his transfer to Adiala Jail on September 23, 2023, where he has remained since then.

Meanwhile, officials confirmed that the Islamabad Model Jail in H-16 is nearing completion and will soon become operational, potentially providing an additional high-security facility in the capital.
