LAHORE (Web Desk): Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman has strongly opposed the Punjab Local Government Act 2025, describing the law as unfair and harmful to democratic rights.

Speaking at a press conference, Hafiz Naeem said his party will hold a public referendum on January 15. He said people will decide whether they accept or reject what he called a “black law”.

He warned that protests will intensify if the government ignores public concerns. Hafiz Naeem said his party will surround the Punjab Assembly after the referendum if demands are not addressed.

The JI chief highlighted that Punjab has not held local government elections since 2014. He said it is the duty of the Election Commission to ensure these elections take place. Hafiz Naeem urged young people to take part in the movement. He stressed that real change is only possible when citizens actively raise their voices.

He said power must be shifted to the grassroots level. According to him, bureaucracy will continue to grow stronger if authority remains centralized. Referring to ‘Article 140-A’ of the Constitution, Hafiz Naeem said it clearly demands the transfer of powers to local governments. He accused the provincial government of keeping control at the center and pushing for non-party local elections.
