Ambreen Jan’s selection was made during a meeting of a parliamentary committee chaired by Shehbaz Babar. The committee was tasked with appointing the next head of PEMRA, an institution that plays a key role in regulating television and electronic media across Pakistan.
Following unanimous approval by the committee, Ambreen Jan’s name has been forwarded to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for final confirmation. Once approved, she will become the first female chairperson in PEMRA’s history.

PEMRA is currently headed by Mohammad Saleem Baig, who has been serving in the position on an interim basis. The new appointment is expected to bring administrative continuity and fresh leadership to the authority.
Ambreen Jan is a former Grade 22 officer with extensive experience in government and media-related roles. She has previously served as the managing director of Pakistan Television (PTV), where she was involved in policy decisions and public broadcasting management.
Sources said she was selected from a shortlist of five candidates. Other contenders included Brigadier (retd.) Anwar Ahmed, Mateen Haider, Irfan Ashraf, and Dr Hamid Khan.

Observers say her background in information management and broadcasting gives her an edge at a time when electronic media faces challenges related to regulation, digital expansion, and content oversight.
The final decision now rests with the prime minister, whose approval will formally confirm her appointment and open a new chapter for PEMRA.
