The controversy arose during a recent meeting of the Senate Committee on Communications, when Palwasha questioned the minister over a road project funded by taxpayers. Aleem Khan reacted angrily, leading to a heated exchange.
“We will treat you the way we are treated,” Aleem had said, objecting to the scrutiny. Palwasha, however, accused him of personal attacks and defended her right to question public spending.
At a press conference in Islamabad, the senator emphasised that her concern was not personal but about the collective dignity of the parliament. “If we tolerate and don’t raise our voice against this, it will soon become the norm,” she said.
Palwasha explained that she had previously submitted a written question about the National Highway Authority road, asking whether it was built for public benefit or for a specific society. She stressed, “Raising questions on the utilisation of public resources is the fundamental duty of legislators.”

The senator thanked PPP leadership for supporting her stance on defending the dignity of parliamentarians and democratic rights. She criticised the committee chairman for failing to maintain order during the session.
Palwasha also demanded the formation of a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to conduct a forensic audit of the Communications Ministry based on the IMF report’s revelations.
Earlier, PPP leader Sherry Rehman had demanded an apology from Aleem Khan, saying, “He must apologise. She is due that basic right of respect as an honourable member of Parliament from a federal minister.” The PPP also described the verbal attacks as “disappointing” and said humiliation of a party woman is intolerable.
The incident highlights tensions in parliamentary oversight. Palwasha Khan asserts accountability for public funds. PPP’s strong response signals growing focus on respect and democratic standards in parliament. The demand for JIT audit could expose further irregularities in the Communications Ministry.
