Comprehensive laws are necessary to combat hate speech: COAS

RAWALPINDI (Suno News): Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir emphasised the need of comprehensive laws and regulations to combat hate speech and misinformation.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), COAS General Asim Munir (NI) attended the special ceremony of “Margalla Dialogue 2024,” organized by Islamabad Policy Research Institute (IPRI).

COAS said rapid dissemination of false information has become a significant issue, destabilizing the political and social structures.

“World is facing several issues, rapid spread of misinformation and false information is one of the them,” COAS said, adding that rise of influence of non-state actors due to several global changes is also a great challenge. It also caused rise of terrorism.

Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir stated that world had witnessed numerous changes in economy, military, and technology. Violent non-state actors and state-sponsored terrorism have posed a significant challenge worldwide. He emphasised that while technology has played a crucial role in spreading information, the dissemination of misinformation and false information is also a major challenge.

General Asim Munir highlighted that without comprehensive laws and regulations, false and misleading information and hate speech can destabilize political and social structures. He noted that freedom of expression without boundaries leads to the decline of moral values in societies. Globally, religious, sectarian, and ethnic disparities, intolerance, and divisions are rising.

Regarding environmental issue, General Asim Munir stated that our shared objectives include combating climate change, fighting terrorism, and providing global health care. Pakistan plays a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability in the region and the world.

General Asim Munir reaffirmed Pakistan s commitment to combat terrorism. A comprehensive border management regime has been established to secure Pakistan s western borders. He emphasised that Pakistan expects the Afghan interim government to prevent the use of Afghan soil for terrorism and take stringent measures.

The Army Chief clarified that Vision “Azm-e-Istehkam” is an important part of National Action Plan, with the aim of elimination of terrorism and extremism. He noted that minority communities, even in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, are not safe due to India s extremist ideology.

General Munir reiterated Pakistan s stance on Kashmir, saying that the resolution of Kashmir issue, in accordance with the UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people, is indispensable. Pakistan has consistently called for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and provided humanitarian aid to these regions. General Munir emphasised Pakistan s support for an independent Palestinian state.

Pakistan is country of 240 million people and has plenty of natural resources. Pakistan can play an important role in global economy.
