Reports reveal that flour prices have been rising continuously for the last two weeks. Just a fortnight ago, a 20kg bag cost Rs1,400, but the price has now jumped to Rs1,700, putting immense pressure on household budgets.
According to the Flour Mills Association, the major reason behind this hike is the soaring wheat rates. In the open market, the price of wheat has climbed to Rs2,650 per maund, which is Rs300 higher than just two weeks ago. This increase has directly raised the cost of flour production.
Meanwhile, citizens complain that flour is a basic necessity, and repeated price hikes directly impact their daily lives.
Public circles are urging the government to take immediate steps to control the prices of wheat and flour, warning that this wave of inflation could further intensify the struggles of ordinary people.
Experts caution that if wheat supply and hoarding are not brought under control, flour prices may rise even further in the coming days.
The sudden surge in flour prices reflects the widening gap between demand and supply in Punjab’s wheat market. With wheat prices rising by Rs300 per maund in just two weeks, millers are passing on the cost burden to consumers. For households already struggling with fuel and utility expenses, this jump in flour prices is a major blow to daily survival.

Experts suggest that unless the government intervenes with strict action against hoarding and ensures steady wheat supply, the situation could spiral into an even bigger crisis. The flour price hike is not only an economic concern but also a social one, as it directly threatens food security for low and middle-income families.
