ECP disqualifies 9 PTI lawmakers over May 9 convictions

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk): The Election Commission of Pakistan has disqualified 9 members of parliament, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders including Senator Shibli Faraz and MNA Omar Ayub.

The Election Commission also issued a notification disqualifying PTI members of the assembly. Those disqualified include 5 members of the National Assembly, 3 members of the provincial assembly, and one senator.

PTI leaders have been disqualified in light of the decisions of the Anti-Terrorism Court Faisalabad. The court sentenced 11 members, including Opposition Leader in the Senate Shibli Faraz, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub and Zartaj Gul, to 10 years in prison each.

The notification from the Election Commission states that according to the court decision, all members have been sentenced to imprisonment, and the membership of PTI leaders Shibli Faraz and Omar Ayub in the Senate and National Assembly has been terminated.

The notification states that Rai Haider Ali, Hamid Raza, Hassan Nawaz and Ansar Iqbal are also disqualified, Zartaj Gul, Junaid Afzal Sahi, Murtaza Iqbal and others have also been disqualified.

According to the Election Commission, PTI members of the assembly have been declared disqualified under Article 63(1H) of the Constitution and their assembly seats have been declared vacant. The Election Commission of Pakistan has de-notified all the members, while their seats have now been declared vacant.
