(Web Desk): Section 144 has been imposed in Murree from December 31 to January 1 as authorities enforce strict New Year SOPs, traffic restrictions, and safety measures amid heavy tourist inflow.

The Murree district administration has imposed Section 144 ahead of New Year celebrations to maintain law and order and ensure public safety in Pakistan’s most visited hill station. The restrictions will remain in force from December 31 to January 1, according to Murree police.

Under the enforced measures, Mall Road and GPO Chowk have been declared family-only zones for two days. The District Police Officer (DPO) Murree said the decision aims to provide a peaceful and secure environment for tourist families celebrating New Year in Murree. Visitors not traveling with families have been advised to celebrate in New Murree, Galiyat, and other nearby tourist destinations.

Alongside Section 144, the Murree administration has announced strict New Year SOPs and a comprehensive traffic plan to control crowds and prevent untoward incidents. Authorities have adopted a zero-tolerance policy, imposing a complete ban on aerial firing, fireworks, alcohol consumption, street fights, and other unlawful activities. Violators will face strict legal action, officials warned.

As part of the Murree traffic plan for New Year’s night, Mall Road will remain completely closed to all types of vehicles. All leaves of traffic wardens have been canceled, and special squads of traffic police have been deployed across the city to manage traffic flow and assist tourists. The City Traffic Police Murree confirmed strict action against underage drivers, one-wheeling, vehicles without number plates, black or tinted windows, helmetless motorcyclists, and motorcycles without silencers. A complete ban on motorcyclists has also been enforced in sensitive areas.

Meanwhile, Murree remains under thick cloud cover, and a large number of tourists have already started arriving for New Year festivities. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast rain and snowfall from December 31 to January 2, raising concerns over road safety and traffic congestion.

In view of the expected snowfall in Murree and Galiyat, the Punjab Highway Department has issued an alert, directing officials to remain on full emergency readiness. Authorities have been instructed to keep snow-removal machinery operational at all times to ensure road clearance and minimize disruption during adverse weather conditions.

Police and district administration have urged tourists to strictly follow SOPs, cooperate with law enforcement personnel, and adhere to traffic rules. In case of emergencies, citizens and visitors can contact the police helpline by dialing 15.

Officials reiterated that these measures are aimed at preventing overcrowding, enhancing security, and ensuring peaceful New Year celebrations for residents and tourists in Murree, which regularly experiences heavy tourist pressure during holiday seasons.
