(Web Desk): Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz orders traffic police not to arrest or harass school and college students amid ongoing enforcement drive.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has intervened to protect students from harsh treatment during the province’s ongoing traffic crackdown, instructing authorities not to arrest or harass minors.

The CM emphasized that school and college students must not face criminal procedures for traffic violations. She directed police officers to avoid handcuffing or intimidating underage riders, saying such actions against minors are unacceptable.

Earlier on Monday, several students were brought to courts across Punjab for legal proceedings. Parents and lawyers quickly stepped in to secure their release, raising concerns that arrests could harm students’ academic and future employment records. Lawyers urged authorities to adopt corrective, non-punitive measures for underage riders.

Following the chief minister’s instructions, Additional IG Traffic Waqas Nazeer ordered officers to stop student arrests immediately. Instead, he instructed police to hold parents accountable if they allow minors to drive motorcycles illegally.

In parallel, the City Traffic Police Lahore announced internal enforcement measures. Officers impounded 149 official vehicles over unpaid e-challans during the last 72 hours. Vehicles were returned only after fines were cleared, reflecting a crackdown on negligence within the force itself.

Officials said the revised approach aims to ensure traffic rules are enforced without punishing children, while maintaining safety on roads. The decision highlights a balance between strict law enforcement and protection of underage citizens.
