CM Punjab launches ‘Lungs of Lahore’ initiative
(Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched “Lungs of Lahore” initiative aimed at combating environmental pollution.

According to the Punjab government, more than 4.8 million trees will be planted under the initiative, “Lungs of Lahore” which will be executed by the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Lahore. The green belt will span 112 kilometers around Lahore, covering an area of 1,711 acres to serve as a natural air filter for the city.

Officials confirmed that the Ring Forestation Project will be completed in three phases. The first phase covers 1,210 acres across 59 kilometers, the second phase will add 31 kilometers, and the final phase another 22 kilometers. The first stage is expected to be completed within a year.

The initiative is projected to directly benefit over 20 million residents, improving air quality and urban biodiversity. The plantation drive will include a mix of fruit-bearing and native tree species such as jamun, guava, and kachnar, along with ornamental varieties like palkan, arjun, gul-e-nishtar, sukh chain, and jatropha.

Officials emphasized that the “Lungs of Lahore” project will not only enhance the city’s green cover but also stand as a long-term solution to the worsening smog crisis, setting a new global benchmark for urban environmental management.
