From groceries and medicines to clothing, shoes, and household goods, nearly everything is now being delivered to people’s doorsteps. Online shopping, which was once a convenience, has now become a necessity. While the surge in online shopping began during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has since evolved into a lasting shift in consumer behavior.

In 2024, the Asian Development Bank reported that Pakistanis spent $10.4 billion through online platforms alone. Electronics, fashion, beauty products, and luxury items were what they spent most on online. Interestingly, around $2.3 billion was generated by online booking of airline tickets annually, making it the second-largest segment. This reflects how the online market is becoming increasingly popular, not just among the youth, but also among the middle and upper-income groups.
It is important to note that the growth of online travel has grown remarkably. The second biggest area of online shopping for Pakistanis is booking flights online, which brings around $2.3 billion in annual revenue. This clearly shows that people are increasingly adapting to digital services.
According to experts, this surge in online shopping is a result of rapid mobile banking, advancements in e-commerce, and digital payment gateways. They suggest that if online shopping is continuously supported by the government, then it could lead to the creation of new business opportunities, boost employment, and open doors for exports.
