NADRA app allows deceased to cancel IDs via liveness check
(Web Desk): The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) mobile application has introduced a perplexing feature that seemingly permits deceased individuals to cancel their own identity cards.

Under the "Cancel Identity Due to Death" section, users are presented with two options: one for relatives of the deceased and another labeled "Myself." The app will initiate a liveness check if the latter is selected. The liveness check is a process used to confirm that the individual is physically alive and matches the official record.

This raises the question: how can a deceased person log into the NADRA app, initiate an application through the "Myself" option, and complete a liveness check?

The "Cancel Identity Due to Death" service is intended solely for the relatives of the deceased, stated a NADRA spokesperson when asked for clarification. However, the reason as to why the app provides a "Myself" selection for the deceased or why it requires a liveness check for someone presumed dead has not been addressed by the spokesperson.

The design and functionality of critical government mobile applications in Pakistan have been highlighted through these ongoing issues. The explanation of this feature in the app has not been provided by NADRA’s spokesperson. This leaves many questions open about whether the feature is a technical glitch, a mislabeling error, or an unaddressed flaw in the app’s design.
