(Web Desk): A decade-long government programme now helps households swap power-hungry fans for energy-saving ones through easy installment plans.

The Pakistani government has launched a bold new 10‑year project to replace 88 million old and inefficient fans with modern energy-saving models. This nationwide effort, led by the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA), aims to reduce the pressure on the power grid and lower electricity bills for millions of homes.

The Ministry of Finance has allocated Rs 2 billion as a technical grant. Consumers will pay for the new fans through installments added to their electricity bills, making the transition affordable.

Banks will offer financing at KIBOR + 2%, backed by a government risk guarantee, to protect both customers and lenders. This Islamic Musawamah-based model ensures the program remains sharia-compliant and fair.

Interested households can apply via the NEECA online portal. The chosen fans will be installed by manufacturers, who will also collect old fans and provide after-sales support.

Experts say that fans alone account for a large chunk of Pakistan’s peak cooling load more than 11,000 MW during hot summer months. This fan upgrade could help reduce peak electricity demand by 5,000–7,000 MW, easing the burden on the national grid.

This fan replacement programme is a smart step toward both energy efficiency and financial relief for consumers.
