Stargazers in Pakistan and around the globe are in for a celestial treat as the first Supermoon of 2025 is set to appear in the night sky on October 7. This rare lunar event promises a spectacular display, with the moon appearing larger and brighter than usual.
A Supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest point to Earth in its orbit — known as perigee. During this alignment, the moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon, creating a stunning visual for observers, especially when it rises near the horizon.
On October 7, the moon will be approximately 224,599 miles (361,200 km) from Earth. This will make it the closest Supermoon since November 2024, marking it as one of the most striking astronomical events of the year.
According to astronomers, three Supermoons are expected in 2025. Following October’s lunar spectacle, two more Supermoons are scheduled to appear on November 5 and December 5. Although another Supermoon will rise in January 2026, it will fall outside the 2025 calendar year.
The November Supermoon is forecast to be the brightest of the year, with the moon drawing even closer to Earth at just 221,817 miles (356,885 km) — enhancing its brilliance even further.
Supermoons have become popular sky-watching events due to their dramatic visual impact, especially when observed during moonrise or moonset. The larger-than-life moon, glowing against the evening or early morning sky, offers a perfect photo opportunity and a moment of awe for sky enthusiasts.
Experts recommend heading to open areas away from city lights for the best view. No telescopes or special equipment are needed — just clear skies and a good vantage point.
