According to Kashmir Media Service (KMS), the Indian government has imposed a five-year ban on the Public Action Committee and Jammu and Kashmir Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen. The justification for this ban was threats to India’s sovereignty, integrity, and security.
KMS reports that both Kashmiri organizations have been accused of supporting militancy, promoting anti-India narratives, and collecting funds. The All Parties Hurriyat Conference called the ban an attempt to silence the political voice of the Kashmiri people.
According to KMS, the Jammu and Kashmir Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen, led by Masroor Abbas Ansari, was also banned for demanding the right to self-determination. Many historical Muslim sites in Occupied Kashmir have been erased or ignored by Indian policies.
KMS further reports that over the past two decades, numerous Islamic libraries and schools have been confiscated or closed. In February 2025, the police raided dozens of bookshops and seized hundreds of copies of books by Islamic scholar Maulana Maududi.
To eliminate Muslim culture in Occupied Kashmir, more than 500 restrictions have been imposed on Kashmiri mosques in the last four years. Kashmiri language schools have either been shut down or converted to Hindi. The number of institutions teaching music and poetry has decreased from 90 to just 15 in the past 25 years. Additionally, industries like carpet weaving and shawl making have also declined.
