FO condemns ‘Afghan extremists’ attack on Pakistani consulate in Germany

ISLAMABAD: (Suno News) Pakistan on Sunday strongly condemned an attack by a gang of Afghan extremists on the Pakistani consulate in German city Frankfurt on Saturday when some Afghan nationals pelted stones at the Pakistani consulate and even brought down its national flag on Saturday.

In a statement, the Foreign Office (FO) also criticised German authorities for their failure to protect the premises of its consular mission.

It condemned the attack, saying: “In yesterday’s incident, the security of Pakistan’s consulate in Frankfurt was breached, endangering the lives of its consular staff.

The FO reminded the German government that “under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, 1963 it is the responsibility of the host government to protect the sanctity of the consular premises and ensure the security of diplomats.”

It added, “We are conveying our strong protest to the German government. It urged Berlin to take “immediate measures” to ensure the security of Pakistani diplomatic missions and staff in the country.

It also urged the local government to take immediate measures to “arrest and prosecute those involved in yesterday’s incident and hold to account those responsible for the lapses in security”.

It is not the first time a section of Afghan nationals has exhibited hostility towards Pakistan at neutral venue.

Protesting against the traffic incident with the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin, also Pakistani diplomatic officials have demanded an investigation into the terrorist attack.

As per foreign media, German authorities have arrested several people after the video of the attack went viral on the social media.

Earlier, the German authorities had permitted the Afghan citizens to hold a peaceful protest outside the consulate. However, the protesters went berserk and tried to enter the consulate building. They also tried to set the Pakistani flag to fire.

Pakistani diplomatic officials said that it was the responsibility of the German government to ensure security of foreign diplomatic installations.
