Suspect allegedly involved in police constable’s murder arrested

LAHORE: (Suno News) Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the murder of a policeman who was shot dead while he was on his way to home after performing his duty at Texali Gate area of Lahore earlier that day.

 Constable Ghulam Rasool had fallen prey to the firing inside Taxali Gate where unidentified persons opened fire on him.

The local police have arrested the suspect besides recovering the weapons and the motorcycle used in the terrorist attack, and handed him over to the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).

According to the police, raids are being conducted to arrest the other brother of Sufyan Khorasani. The clothes and gloves worn by the arrested accused last night have also recovered. Sufyan and his brother are involved in target killing, the police alleged.

Sufyan and his three brothers are activists of a banned organization, the police officials said that added that they are are residents of Shahdara, a suburb of Lahore.

After the incident, Constable Ghulam Rasool was shifted to a nearby hospital in critical condition and later succumbed to the bullet wounds. The victim was posted at the judicial wing.

The alleged shooter was spotted through Safe City cameras in Gulberg area. The perpetrator had fled towards Bhati Gate after firing. A case was registered.

The issue of targeted killing of police personnel in uniform has become a serious concern.

After the target killing of the cop, Inspector General (IG) Punjab Usman Anwar has ordered the immediate arrest of the accused involved in the incident.

Various teams consisting of police and CTD personnel were conducting search operations in different areas and the perpetrators will be arrested soon, they said.

In the last 10 days, three cops including a sub-inspector have been martyred while two others seriously injured in Lahore.

On April 28, the sub-inspector was targeted and killed by armed suspects in Misri Shah area of Lahore.

In March 2024, at least two cops were killed and another sustained injuries after “terrorists” opened fire on a police van at the Machni Gate area of Peshawar city.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police confirmed in a post on social media platform X Ajmal Khan and Siraj Khan were killed in the attack while an assistant sub-inspector sustained wounds.

“According to SSP Operations Peshawar, Kashif Aftab Abbasi, the policemen were on routine patrolling when the terrorists ambushed and attacked the police mobile,” as per state-run news agency APP.

Later, the victims were laid to rest at Peshawar’s Police Lines area. Police officers including relatives of the martyred attended the funeral prayers in large numbers.
