(Web Desk): Dense fog blanketed large parts of Punjab overnight, forcing the closure of several major motorways as visibility dropped sharply, disrupting traffic and prompting urgent safety advisories for commuters.

Dense fog once again gripped the plain areas of Punjab, including Lahore, during the night between Sunday and Monday, severely affecting routine life and road travel across the province. Low visibility conditions created hazardous driving environments, leading authorities to shut multiple motorway sections to prevent accidents.

According to a spokesperson for the National Highways and Motorway Police, the M-2 Motorway from Lahore to Kot Momin, M-3 from Lahore to Darkhana, M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Abdul Hakeem, M-5 from Multan to Zahir Pir, and the Lahore–Sialkot Motorway M-11 were closed for all kinds of traffic due to dense fog.

Officials said fog also disrupted traffic on several sections of the National Highway, where visibility was recorded between zero and 100 metres in some areas. The closures were imposed strictly as a precautionary measure to protect lives and property amid dangerous driving conditions.

The Motorway Police advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel, especially during late-night and early-morning hours when fog intensity is at its peak. Authorities noted that visibility generally improves between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, making daytime travel comparatively safer.

Drivers who must travel have been urged to strictly follow lane discipline, reduce speed, use fog lights, and maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead. Motorists were also encouraged to use alternative routes such as the Grand Trunk (GT) Road wherever possible.

Health experts have warned that dense fog, combined with poor air quality, poses serious risks for children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions. Citizens have been advised to limit outdoor exposure until weather conditions improve.

Motorway Police officials said the situation is being closely monitored and closed sections will be reopened once visibility improves. For real-time traffic updates, route guidance, or emergency assistance, commuters have been advised to contact the Motorway Police helpline at 130.
