Netblocks confirms nationwide disruption to social media platforms
LAHORE: (Web Desk) Internet tracking agency Netblocks has confirmed that live metrics showed a nation-scale disruption to social media platforms across Pakistan.
“Confirmed: Live metrics show a nation-scale disruption to social media platforms across Pakistan, including X/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube,” the Internet stated at 7:12pm.
Netblocks reported the nationwide disruption to social media platforms amid a virtual event organised by the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI).
It said that “the incident comes as persecuted opposition leader Imran Khan’s political party, PTI, launches its second virtual gathering.” Netblocks Director Alp Toker noted, “We can confirm the nation-scale restriction of social media platforms across Pakistan.”
He informed AFP that the outage was “remarkably systematic” and “consistent with previous restrictions imposed during PTI events”.
Users are experiencing difficulties accessing social media platforms across the country particularly in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. They are facing difficulties in connecting to social media sites like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube. Complaints about sluggish internet services have also been reported.
A similar disruption occurred on January 7 as the PTI held a virtual fundraising telethon. Also on December 17, Social media platforms were similarly impacted when the PTI held a virtual power show.
The outage of Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube is the second in two weeks coinciding with online campaign events organised by PTI.
The political meeting was due to broadcast the party leaders’ speeches by livestream. However, the internet disruptions were reported even before the event had begun.
