ISLAMABAD: (Web Desk) Caretaker Interior Minister Gohar Ijaz says that after the loss of 28 lives on February 7, a decision was made to shut down the internet and mobile phone services on Election Day for the safety of citizens.

While addressing a press conference with caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi in Islamabad, he said: “If we have to take a similar decision again for the safety of citizens, we will do it. We were criticised for shutting down the internet and mobile phone services.

However, the election commission officials had nothing to do with our decision. Security agencies informed us that it was very important for us to take that decision so that people’s lives could be saved.”

He also said, “The decision to suspend the internet and mobile phone services was not easy. I will make such a decision every time. If a bomb exploded in a car, thousands of lives would have been lost.”

Gohar Ejaz said that the security agencies operated the system in the best manner so that no one had any fear. “But despite this, 56 incidents took place on February 8 in which three soldiers, two Levies, and seven police personnel were martyred while four civilians including two children were also killed.”

He also said, “Security is the first priority. The government has to make those decisions that are in favour of the nation. There were reports by intelligence agencies that the election staff going to the ballot boxes could be attacked through IED devices. Therefore, the decision to shut down internet and mobile phone services was necessary, for we should not take any risk.”
