Actress Yashma Gill shares her ‘Atheism to Islam’ journey

KARACHI: (Web Desk) Pakistani actress Yasmina Gil posed an important question to renowned Islamic scholar Dr Zakir Naik, who is on month-long visit to Pakistan, during an event held at the Sindh Governor House.

 A large number of people from different walks of life converged to the event. the actress raised the question after Dr Naik delivered a lecture on the theme, "What is the Purpose of Our Lives?"

Before asking question, Yasmina Gil shared her personal journey of returning to faith being influenced by Dr Naik’s speeches, after experiencing a period of atheism.

The acress inquired about the concept of predestination, asking, "If Allah has already written a person’s destiny, what free will do we have? Who is responsible for our choices between right and wrong when we believe that our fate is already determined?"

Dr Naik in his reply acknowledged that this question often arises in the minds of many Muslims. He explained that while some are courageous enough to ask, others may hesitate due to fears of religious repercussions.

Dr Naik elaborated that while Allah possesses knowledge of the unseen and knows the actions individuals will take, humans exercise their free will in making choices. "It is not that humans do what Allah has decreed, but rather that Allah writes what humans will choose to do," he stated, emphasizing God s omniscience regarding the decisions individuals will make at various points in their lives.

Dr Naik elaborated by using an analogy that a person standing at a crossroads with four paths. He explained that while Allah has knowledge of which path the individual will ultimately choose, it is the individual who selects their route based on their own thoughts and decisions.

Earlier, the renowned Islamic scholar in the world but controversial in India, highlighted the importance of unity among the Muslim Ummah under the guidance of the Holy Quran and Sunnah.

Calling for providing equal opportunities to learn, grow and prosper, Dr Zakir underscored that acquiring religious and terrestrial knowledge is incredibly important in Islam for social development.

He said, “The first word revealed to Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him)  was “read” – a critical component in attaining knowledge.”

Giving references from various Quranic verses, he highlighted the significance of knowledge and learning being emphasised upon the Muslims at the forefront of discovery and intellect above all others in the world.

Highlighting the importance of unity, he urged the Muslim Ummah to set aside their differences and unite under the guidance of the Holy Quran and Sunnah.

He reiterated that Islam is a complete code of life, advocating for peace, tolerance, and love.

On the occasion, a special documentary on orphans was showcased, illustrating more than 10,000 children receiving essential support, including food, access to education, vital medical care, and treatment in the Sweet Homes.
