Special court appoints state defence counsels for Imran, Qureshi in cipher case

ISLAMABAD: (Suno News) Special Official Secrets Act (OSA) court judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain has appointed state defence counsels after the lawyers for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi did not appear for the hearing of the cipher case in Adiala Jail.

Judge Abual Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain issued an order on the hearing held in connection with the cipher case yesterday.

It was stated in the order that no senior lawyer had appeared in the court on behalf of the accused when the hearing of the case started. It was further stated in the case that the hearing of the case had been resumed at 12:30 pm, and even then no senior counsel on behalf of the accused appeared.

The court in its order said that in view of the facts and circumstances, several chances had been provided to the lawyers for the accused to appear for the hearing.

“The court is left with no option but to appoint a state defence counsel for the accused. The advocate general Islamabad has been asked for a list of lawyers through email for the appointment of a state defence counsel to represent the accused,” the court order said.

“A reply has been received through a letter from the office of the advocate general Islamabad in which the names of competent lawyers have been given who will now represent the case of PTI founder Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi,” it added.
