According to the latest weekly report from the Bureau of Statistics, sugar prices surged by Rs23 per kg in Sargodha alone within a week. In Karachi and Hyderabad, the rates increased by Rs5 per kg, pushing sugar prices in various cities to as high as Rs220 per kg.
The report revealed that in Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Sargodha, sugar is being sold at Rs200 per kg, while in Hyderabad the price rose from Rs190 to Rs195 per kg.
In Lahore, sugar remains available in local markets, but prices are steadily climbing. Market sources said that in the provincial capital, sugar is currently being sold between Rs200 and Rs220 per kg.
Interestingly, the Bureau’s report noted a slight national average decrease of Rs0.12 per kg over the past week, bringing the average price down to Rs188.69 per kg. However, just last week, the average rate was Rs188.81 per kg, while during the same period last year, the price was recorded at Rs132.47 per kg.

The rising cost of sugar has caused concern among consumers and traders alike, as the sweet essential continues to strain household budgets amid already high inflation.
Sugar, once an affordable kitchen staple, has now become a luxury for many households. The sudden jump to Rs220 per kg shows how unstable market trends and supply issues are hurting consumers. While official data suggests a minor average drop, the ground reality tells a different story — sugar prices are biting hard, and relief seems nowhere in sight.
