The government has indicated a substantial reduction in electricity prices. Power Distribution Companies (DISCOs) have submitted a request for a negative adjustment of approximately Rs52.123 billion (around Rs2 per unit) for the second quarter of the fiscal year 2024-25.
Sources claim that the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will hold a public hearing on these requests on February 12, 2025, after which a reduction in electricity prices is expected from March 2025.
It is noteworthy that these requests include a negative adjustment of Rs50.658 billion regarding the improvement in the value of the rupee and a reduction in policy rate. This decrease will cause reduction in electricity prices in March, April, and May, providing significant relief to the public.
Moreover, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also hinted at a further reduction of Rs7 per unit for industrial consumers starting from April 2025.
As a result, electricity prices could drop by a total of Rs9 to 10 per unit, which will be beneficial for the industrial sector.
It is important to note that this decision will not only reduce the burden on the public but will also open pathways for economic improvement. This move is expected to bring stability to the energy sector and boost economic activities across the country due to the reduction in electricity prices.
